Barbera Gittings

(July 31, 1932 – February 18, 2007)

Barbara Gittings is widely known as the mother of the LGBT Civil Rights Movement. There is a picture of her in the Smithsonian at one of the first picket lines for Gay Rights. She organized the New York Chapter of the first lesbian civil rights organizations, was editor of the first lesbian publication to be distributed nationally, and was part of the movement to get Homosexuality stricken from Psychiatric books as a mental illness.
